Stirm Wine Co. 2016 Kick-On Vineyard Santa Barbara County Riesling

The California Wine Club

Tasting Notes: Marginally richer and showing a bit more concentration than its year-older mate from the same site, Stirm’s 2016 offering from the Kick-On Vineyard is a revelation in dry-finished Riesling. It, too, is a vibrant and aggressively energetic effort of great fruity clarity and structured depth and is marked by an involving sense of varietal intricacy that experience teaches is certain to become more evident with the passing of time. That is not to say that the wine is anything less than fascinating right now, but any who doubt Riesling’s capacity to age need look no further than this eminently cellarworthy example, and we would enthusiastically urge that all devotees of the grape hide a few bottles away. 91 Points, Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wine, September 2018 Final Blend: 100% Riesling Case Production: Only 227 cases produced Hold Time: Enjoy now or hold up to 3 years Alcohol by Volume: 12.9% Cheers to another unique wine club find!

Stirm Wine Co. 2016 Wirz Vineyard Cienega Valley Old Vine Riesling

The California Wine Club

Tasting Notes: The Cienega Valley in San Benito County is not the first place that comes to mind when thinking of serious Riesling, nor is the notion of “old vines” often mentioned when discussing the local version, but this expressive effort testifies to the worth of both. One of winemaker Ryan Stirm’s chief concerns is that Riesling reveal a sense of place, and there is no question but that his Wirz Vineyard bottlings speak with a different voice than their slightly sleeker and brighter mates from the Kick-On site. Both the 2015 and 2016 offerings are fuller and a bit riper in tone and give play to the variety’s complexing grapefruit and petrol-like terpene traits while retaining a certain dry, fruity richness, and, while each is impressive, this one wins the nod as the deeper, more continuous of the two. 91 Points, Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wine, September 2018 Final Blend: 100% Riesling Case Production: Only 117 cases produced Hold Time: Enjoy now Alcohol by Volume: 12.7% Cheers to another unique wine club find!
